Another recent discovery , german artist Stefan Milev is a truly eye-catcher. More than a simple fashion photographer, he is a successor of the 19th’s century fine art photography. A lover of analog aesthetics, his portraits could be almost paintings. Read below our little chat with him!

Hello Stefan, what did drive you to be a fashion photographer?

I always had a focus on art, but I never wanted to photograph cars or stills. I love portraits. In the very begining of the 90 ‘I have discovered some photographs of Lindbergh & Penn, henceforth I knew which direction I want to go. They have infected me. It is is more than 20 years ago …

Where are you based in and why?

Now I live with my wife and daughter in Pattonville, (a small town in the middle of nowhere) because I’m there away from the hustle and bustle. I work mostly in Paris and Berlin.

Do you feel you have a defined style?

Oh yes, it’s very simple and unique. It’s a mix of mystery and beauty and it stands somewhere between photography and painting. Nevertheless, I am learning something new every day.

What do you think needs to be admired in the fashion industry? And what would you change?

The fashion industry is boundless, I like that. The point I don’t like is the fast life in fashion. I think everything takes its time even if something takes a long time to leads to a positive result.

Explain us your most challenging project you have ever done…

There are too many … Starting with the time as an assistant … Each day brings something new and unexpected with it

Generally, what do you prefer: to shoot in studio or exteriors?

I have a preference for studio, but I don’t mind to work outside.

I think you are a big fan of analogical photography’s aesthetics. What is your relationship with it?

I am, yes! But I’m using a digital camera, too. In digital i don’t like the fact that you see the photographs on the screen, I rather hold the photographs in my hand to look on it. For me analog has first and foremost much better quality of depth of field, it’s kind of softer than digital and it looks more natural. Sometimes I start a day with the digital camera, but as soon as I’m done with the light and the model is in the right position I jump quickly to the analogue to capture the silhouette on a “one-shot-picture” as a Polaroid or on Film, most 4×5 or 8×10 . I do not like manipulated images.

What/who is your greatest influence?

I have a lot of influences, often from a very different range. Sometimes it’s a musician or a song, sometimes a movie or just some photographs I have seen. I adore Rembrandt and Manet, even they are so different.

What is your biggest goal?

To continue the tradition of Fine Art photographers from the early 19th Century with my signature!

What are your future plans?

To enjoy life as it is. I love my family and my work makes me very happy.

In this editorial “La Mer, qu’on voit danser..” photographed by Stefan Milev, it all comes together in a higher unit for me – how the light is, the way the photos have been processed and how the setup almost creats a feeling of watching a film, a universe where the deserted beach is whispering that weird things happens here.

Not to forget the styling. It’s a perfect mix of minimalistic yet quite artistic and different styling, where a touch of it is making me think of the beginning of the 1900′s where Europeans traveled in Africa and Asia. A time where some women dressed like men, practical and layered. Another reference I get is the designer Matthew Ames. He creates his clothes with a focus on silhouettes, minimalistic expression through the simple fabrics and cuts and with a perfect balance between the feminine and masculine elements.

Anyhow, go check out the other works of Stefan Milev, he’s very talented and a personal favorite among fashion photographers. Enjoy, Cecilie.E

Stefan Milev, 1981, Bulgaria, is a very productive fashion and fine-art photographer based in Paris, France. He spend seven years assisting major photographers around the globe and worked as a photographer in New York for a period of three years. He wants his images to resemble paintings and includes a sense of mystery and beauty, trying to capture emotion, mystic and soul. He wants the photographs to be simple and unique. He is heavily inspired by the great photographers of the 19th and 20th century as Alvin Langdon Coburn, George Seeley, Peter Lindbergh, Irving Penn and Helmut Newton. ....Als ich ankam, war Fotograf Stefan Milev bereits vor Ort. Goldstein schaute interessiert zu, wie dieser mit seiner Kamera hantierte. Milev fotografiert ent- gegen dem Trend der Zeit nicht digital sondern analog. Schießt Polaroids. Ein wenig erinnere ihn seine Arbeitsweise an die von Helmut Newton, sagte Goldstein. Der verstorbene Starfotograf hat mehrmals in dessen Haus seine starken Frauen in Szene gesetzt. Als sich Kati Nescher mit drei Bildern im Buch bei uns vorstellte, verliebte ich mich sofort in ihre natürliche Anmut und ihr entzückendes Strahlen. Ein halbes Jahr später, nach einer überwältigen Saison, 18 Shows alleine in Paris, zahlreichen Fittings, wenig Schlaf und vielen neuen Impressionen, fällt sie mir nach der Valentino Show mit der gleichen Energie fröhlich in die Arme. Nach einem Foto vor den Tuilerien-Gärten springen wir gemeinsam in ein Taxi, wo ich ihr auf dem Weg zur Alexander McQueen Show einige Fragen stelle

Du bist eine der großen Neuentdeckungen dieser Saison. Was war für Dich der schönste Moment der vergangenen vier Wochen?
Meine erste Prada Show...

Welche Show war am emotionalsten?
Jede Show war für mich ein großes Erlebnis, am emotionalsten fand ich Alexander McQueen und Haider Ackermann.

Gibt es ein Lied, dass Du mit der Saison verbindest?
"The Sensual World" von Kate Bush.

Du bist in Russland geboren und aufgewachsen und vor 8 Jahren nach München gezogen. Was vermisst Du an Russland?
Meine Familie und russische Literatur.

Wie warst Du als Kind?
Als Kind war ich sehr aktiv und vielseitig. Außer der normalen Schule besuchte ich Musik-, Ballet- und Malerei-Schulen. Das war alles ganz schön viel für mich...Aber ich habe es einfach geliebt verschiedene Sachen auszuprobieren.

Wie wurdest Du als Model entdeckt?
Nach langem Hin und Her wollte ich einen Neuanfang starten und habe zufällig etwas über meine Mutteragentin Ann Kathrin in einer Zeitschrift gelesen und sie einfach angerufen...Sie hat mich neu entdeckt und innerhalb kürzester Zeit hat sich mein Leben verändert...

Du bist 27, für ein Model ein eher später Einstieg. Viele Deiner Kolleginnen sind 10 Jahre jünger als Du. Wie ist das für Dich?
Mein Alter spielt keine Rolle für mich. Ich finde es geht um die Persönlichkeit, auch bei den 16 oder 17 Jährigen. Aber es war immer lustig deren Reaktion zu sehen, wenn sie erfahren haben wie alt ich bin. Sie wollten es mir einfach nicht glauben, ganz süß. Auf alle Fälle hatten wir jede Menge Spaß zusammen und es war einfach eine tolle Zeit!

Was ist das perfekte Dinner für Dich? Was würdest Du kochen? Was würdest Du tragen? Welche Musik würdest Du spielen?
Mein perfektes Dinner muss auf jeden Fall total romantisch sein, aber nicht kitschig. Am Besten unter freien Himmel voller Sterne, irgendwo in Portugal oder Spanien. Ich würde frische Meeresfrüchte mit Salat oder Gemüse kochen, dazu einen guten Weißwein. Am liebsten würde ich mich allerdings bekochen lassen! Ich würde eine Jazz oder Blues Platte auflegen und ein kleines Schwarzes oder eine lange Tunika in Sommerfarben tragen.

Wenn Du in einer anderen Zeit und an einem anderen Ort leben könntest, wo und wann wäre das? Wer wären Deine Freunde und was würdet ihr machen?
Das wären die 20er-30er Jahre in Berlin oder Paris...Ich würde gerne Alexander Blok und Anna Achmatova kennen lernen. Eigentlich die gesamte damalige emigrierte russische Intelligenz! Vielleicht sogar Mademoiselle Coco Chanel...Ich finde diese Zeit war so unglaublich reich an interessanten Menschen, Genies und Meisterwerken, egal ob in der Mode, dem Film oder der Kunstszene.

Wie sieht Dein perfekter Sonntag aus?
Schön lange ausschlafen, ein üppiges gesundes Frühstück, eine Runde Sport und dann einfach lesen, spazieren gehen, die Badewanne genießen, meine Familie und engsten Freunde um mich haben.

Und wie Dein Traumurlaub? Wer wäre dabei und wie würdet ihr Eure Tage verbringen?
Eine lange Reise um die Welt mit meiner kleinen Familie und ein paar meiner besten Freunde. Einfach los ziehen: viel entdecken, neue Länder, Städte, Menschen, Kulturen...Und wenn wir Zeit für uns wollen, dann fliegen wir zwischendurch auf eine schöne Insel und genießen die Natur.

Ein dickes Buch, eine gute Flasche Rum und meine Mutteragentin Ann-Kathrin, damit wir nicht so lange Urlaub machen...

Wo siehst Du dich in fünf Jahren?
In fünf Jahren sehe ich mich als erfolgreiche Mutter und Businessfrau. Dazu würde ich gerne Schauspielerei ausprobieren.

After the very successful exhibition in January of the present year, Leica Camera AG, Solms proudly presents the second collection of the Leica@Fashionweek Exhibition. The exhibition "COZY UP!" will start on July 9th, 2011. This event in Berlin has been conceived in a unique cooperation between Leica Camera AG, recom GmbH & Co. KG, We Love Artbuying GmbH, and Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH.

The International Festival of Fashion Photography, a unique rendezvous dedicated to fashion, takes place in Cannes for its ninth consecutive edition. Monumental pictures are exhibited in the town: in the Croisette in Cannes, as in the heart of the neighbouring palm grove, the Port Canto rose garden where is presented, as each year, the Festival guest of honour’s work as well as an exhibition of his/her large format printings.

This year, the International Festival of Fashion Photography is pleased to invite the great fashion photographer TYEN, great photographer of fashion and beauty, graphic images, vibrating colours. In the meantime, the Palm Beach Casino, main partner of this event, hosts on its cymas the 2011 selection of contemporary photography creation. Ninety fashion photographers from different backgrounds present their creations on 1 m x 1.50 m printings.

The jury of the 2011 edition of the International Festival of Fashion Photography is composed of key figures belonging to the world of photography such as Peter KNAPP, artistic director, Jean-Luc MONTEROSSO, director of The European House of Photography in Paris, Fred RAWYLER, artistic director. They will give three awards according to the creativity, imagination and daring of the artists’ work –
their ability to fire one’s imagination.

The 2011 Fashion Photography Special Prize will be awarded to a confirmed artist and another 2011 Fashion Photography Prize will be given to a Young Talent.

A special prize is also be awarded to the guest of the Festival.

Fashion photography, freeing itself from the pages of the magazines for the monumental open-air exhibition gallery, fully blossoms and asserts itself as the real creation of an artist and of desire, whether seductive or provocative, from the viewpoint of the walkers, the professionals, or the fashion and art photography amateurs.

Where are the successors of the renowned photographers and icons like Irving Penn, Peter Lindbergh, Avedon, Jim Rakete, Helmut Newton, Roversi or Tim Walker? I don’t see any.

WHAT ADVICE COULD YOU GIVE TO EMERGING ARTISTS?:

We should always try and do things without wasting to much thought about it before.

A highly artistic photographic identity is created by the relationship between the model and his very personal technique of painting with light. Atrabilious, kind of pervicacious, remarkable and additionally very inspiring. I had a great number of word’s floating around in my head while I was writing down an introduction for my Q&A with Stefan Milev , a Photographer from Berlin. And as you may know (or not) Im based in germany myself so this post is most notably to me. Since Iwas focusing on New York Photographers I was curious for some local goodlines that moreover fits into the concept of Models&Style and decided to feature Stefan Milev,because I think there is no one else around in germany with such a unique stil and international potential, true story!

Where do you live and what is your background?

Born in Sofia/Bulgaria, grew up in Germany – than I went to New York to be photo-assistant! Since 2007 I live with my small family in south of Germany. I spend most of the time in Paris for work.

Your style is defnitely outstanding..How would you describe it yourself ?

Oh, thank you! On my website it says: ‘Impressionist. Expressionist. Surrealist.’ – I like that.In my words, it is very “simple” and “beauty” I’m trying to continue the tradition of Fine Art photographers from the 19th Century.

Is there a part of your job that gives you the most satisfaction?

To be Stefan Milev and give the pictures creative expression, sense of mystery and beauty. To capture emotion, mystic and soul, of the people who are looking into the camera.

What kind of Models do you like?

I am always in search of “beauty”, ethereal, natural beauty.

Do you follow the rising stars, who is in which show etc?

Yes I’m watching them…

How looks the perfect picture in your opinion?

A picture should look like a painting, with sense of mystery and beauty. Very simple and unique.

What are your strengths and weaknesses in Photography? Is there anything you want to get better in ?

I’m capricorn, I don’t have waekness – I’m just kidding – I don’t know, maybe a weakness is that I want do everything by myself.

What can you tell yous about your upcoming projects?

I can tell you that they will be some very nice projects and some very nice pictures coming soon! Maybe i’ll produce a book this year, be surprised.

A book , how interesting! Tell us , if you could change something in the fashion industry for ever what would it be?

Oh yes, I hate all the lies and fakes in photography and in fashion industry – But i think i’ll be not able to change it

In the end, is there any special quote/motto that always keeps you going?

We should always try and do things without wasting to much thought about it before.

This Tranoi Number 7 Spread is Stylishly Aged

The recent edition of magazine Tranoi Number 7 consisted of vintage photography and modern fashions. Tranoi worked with Dune for this editorial to bring an artistic feel that is reminiscent of the early 20th century.

The sepia-toned images contrasted with contemporary fashions as the photographer cleverly maintained vintage appeal within a modern, thematic shoot. Ultimately, the Tranoi Number 7 shoot is reminiscent of western Europe in the 1930s, with the model channeling vixens of the era.

Das bewusste anders
sein, hat sich der in Berlin,
Stuttgart und New York arbeitende
Fotograf konsequent
erarbeitet. Angefangen hat
es bei Stefan Milev mit einer
technisch eher puristischen
Spiegelreflex vom Typ Praktica,
die Milevs Mutter am
Dachboden ausgegraben
hatte und dem damals
14jährigen überlies. Dann
kam die eigene Dunkelkammer
dazu und der Zauber, Filme und Bilder
selbst zu entwickeln. Eine private Fotoschule
in Pforzheim war nach dem Realschulabschluß
Milevs Hoffnung, die Fotografie eines
Tages zum Beruf machen zu können. Wäre da
nicht der Zufall in Person von Christian Marquardt,

Geschichte geendet hätte. So engagierte Marquard
nach einer Praktikumswoche den jungen
Mann als Assistent und der lernte in den
vier folgenden Jahren alles über Lichtführung
und technische Ausleuchtung mit Blitzanlagen,
Lichtpistolen und allen Arten von Kunstlicht.
»Vielleicht war es diese extrem lehrreiche
Zeit, die mir half, meinen eigenen Weg ohne
all diesen technischen Lichtaufwand zu entdecken,
« erklärt Stefan Milev heute.
Dann zog es Milev nach New York. Innerhalb
kürzester Zeit war er bei einigen erfolgreichen
Fotografen geschätzter
Assistent und kehrte nach vier
Monaten in die Heimat zurück
um seine Freundin zu heiraten
um mit ihr bald darauf in
Big Apple zu leben und zu arbeiten.
»Es war nicht nur New
York, wir waren durch meine
Jobs als Assistent bei namhaften
Studios bei Produktionen
in Buenos Aires, Moskau,
New York und rund um die
Welt immer wieder unterwegs. Eine traumhafte
Zeit, doch irgendwann wollten wir wieder
nach Deutschland. Das war 2007 und ich
machte mich in Berli und Stuttgartselbständig

Milev für die Fashion
Week Berlin, alles auf Polaroid
und bei minus 5 Grad im
Freien. »Sie können sich an
den Fingern abzählen, daß
die Bilder bernsteinfarben
überlagert sind. Doch ich
hatte mit den Auftraggebern
genau diese Wiedergabe abgesprochen
und alle waren
von den Fotos begeistert.«
Wie entstehen nun diese
emotionalen Bilder, die das Auge minutenlang
in den Bann ziehen und unsere Gefühle
befeuern? Am Anfang steht das Konzept. Freie
Produktionen tragen Namen wie »Badezeit“. Aus
dieser stammt übrigens auch das FineArtPrinter-
Titelfoto. Themengemäss werden Models
inszeniert, als seien sie aus einer sagenumwobenen
Traumwelt entsprungen. Schönheit und
Anmut, Leichtigkeit und Sensibilität spiegeln
sich in ihren Gesten und Gesichtern. In dieser
entrückten Szenerie gibt es keine Blitzröhren,
Softboxen oder gar HMI-Scheinwerfer. Ganz
natürlich fällt das Licht durch Fenster, wird mal
von einem Reflektor aufgehellt oder wirft so tiefe
Schatten, daß jeder andere Fotograf exakt da
einen Aufheller platzieren würde. Nicht so Stefan
Milev. »Ich bin zwar noch lange nicht am Ziel
mit meinem Können, doch mit Licht fühle ich
mich eins und spüre genau, was ich bewusst im
Schatten verlieren darf, um in den Lichtern die
Geschichte gefühlvoll zu erzählen.« Vielleicht
sind es genau derart fragile Szenen, in denen
wir uns mit unseren eigenen Emotionen finden,
in denen unsere Phantasie im sanften Licht der
Szene eigene Empfindungen zu wecken. Sachlich
beobachtet benötigen Fotos, die Emotionen
wecken, undefinierte Bereiche, die der
Betrachter mit seiner Interpretation füllt. Unterbelichtung
oder Unschärfe sind
solche Zonen in den Bildern,
die erst durch den Betrachter
mit Aussagen gefüllt werden.
Die Geschichte also anzureißen
und uns als Betrachter die Ausmalung
oder Interpretation zu
überlassen, das ist eine mögliche
Erklärung für die Faszination.
Was es auch immer Auslösen
mag, Stefan Milev macht
kein Hehl daraus, dass er zwar
gerne Polaroid-Material einsetzt,
dass er aber auch mit der
digitalen Mittelformatkamera
P45+ sehr gerne emotionale Bilder zaubert. »Ich
entwickle die RAW-Files aus der Mittelformat-
Kamera P45+ über eigene Kurven in Capture
One so anders,
dass kaum ein
Fachmann erkennen
kann, ob
das Foto auf Polaroid
oder digital
mit der P45+
entstanden ist.«

Ein dämonischer Blick und andere Duftnoten

Fotokunst abseits von "Cheeese": Sänger Chris Jones, Bruder von Grace Jones, flog zur Fotosession nach Stuttgart.

An die Brikettfriseur seiner Schwester erinnern sich alle, die Grace Jones von den 80ern kennen. Mit eingeöltem Muskelkörper und androgynem Image war die große Schwarze eine Lichtgestalt dieser Ära, eine stilprägende Performerin, die nun mit dem Retrotrend zurückkehrt. Dass der ebenfalls singende Chris Jones ihr Bruder ist, kann niemanden überraschen, der seine Fotos sieht, die in dieser Woche im Club Zapata entstanden sind. Der Blick des Bruders ist ebenso dämonisch. Ein Rätsel scheint darin verborgen. Als trage der Mann ein Geheimnis mit sich herum, bei dessen Klärung er nicht allen Menschen helfen wird, aber jenen dafür umso leidenschaftlicher, die ihn reizen, weil sie vom selben Stern sind.

Der Fotograf Stefan Milev, 28, ist vom selben Stern. Den 27 Jahre älteren Chris Jones lernte er im Sommer kennen, als dieser seine Schwester Grace Jones zu den Jazzopen nach Stuttgart begleitete. Seitdem gehen E-Mails und SMS hin und her. Chris Jones ist für den jungen Fotografen das beste Beispiel dafür, dass viele Dinge für eine Männerfreundschaft wichtig sind, am allerwenigsten aber das Alter. "Bei den Menschen ist es wie beim Wein", sagt der 55-jährige Jones am 333-Telefon, "es ist besser, wenn man in die Jahre kommt."

Sein erstes Soul-Album hat er "Strong" genannt: "Nach so vielen Jahren des Experimentierens habe ich verstanden - was dich nicht killt, macht dich stark." Jahrzehntelang war der Sohn eines Bischofs als Fotomodel weltweit unterwegs. Mit sechs Geschwistern ist er in Jamaika aufgewachsen. Die ältere Schwester Grace wollte lieber ein Junge sein und sah ihre Rolle darin, die Brüder zu beschützen. Ist es für ihn hart, der jüngere Bruder eines Weltstars zu sein? Chris Jones lächelt: "Es ist oft nicht leicht - aber es wäre noch schwieriger, wenn ich eine ihrer Schwestern wäre." Die Fotos des Stuttgarters Stefan Milev sollen seine Karriere als Sänger weiter fördern (siehe www.chrisjonesmusic.net).

Mit viel Farbe im Gesicht hat Milev bei der siebenstündigen Fotosession im Zapata seinen Freund inszeniert. "Chris hat so viele Facetten", sagt der junge Fotograf, "und ist immer wieder für Überraschungen gut." Für den Fototermin in Stuttgart wählte der fürwahr farbige Soul-Sänger eine Zeit, da sich ein weiterer Freund, mit dem er in Berlin seine Runden dreht, in unserer Stadt aufhält. TV-Star Roman Knizka steht gerade für die SWR-Komödie "Generation Praktikum" mit Jutta Speidel und Monika Hirschle vor der Kamera. Zu den Drehorten zählt bis zum heutigen Samstag ein Wohnhaus an der Bismarckstraße. Einige Bewohner wurden ins Hotel umquartiert, andere sind begeistert: "Man hat uns alle Fenster geputzt." Am 30. Oktober soll der Film im Kasten sein, der sich über die ewigen Praktikanten lustig macht, die als Jobanwärter von den Firmen immer nur vertröstet werden. Praktikant Ben alias Roman Knizka hat eine Idee: Er mischt sich einfach ins Liebesleben des Chefs ein . . .
